How To Install A Campervan Sky Light
Im going to show you how i install a sky light in my van conversion.
- Waterproof silicone sealant
- No More Nails
2-3 Hours approximately
The skylight can be installed by yourself but it is always easier to have another pair of hands.
First things first i need to decided were to install the skylight. Above you kitchen perhaps? or maybe above your bed? It really does not matter but I defiantly need a good think because once the hole is cut there is no going back.
I decided to install mine in the centre of the van near the back doors because it went in line with the walk way inside the van.
First I got on top of the van roof and marked the centre of the van with a pencil were I want the roof light be installed, then placed the roof light directly above the marked spot. Once it’s sitting in place looking central and square, draw a line around the inside of the light on to the van. Now I know were to cut.
I drilled a hole were I marked the centre and looked inside the van to double check the sky light looked central inside before I cut the whole thing out.
Once happy with markings its time to cut the hole out. First drill a hole in each corner big enough for the jigsaw blade to fit in. Next slowly cut along the line all away around. Now file around the edge so there’s no rough/Sharp metal.
My van had a raised section on the middle of the roof, so when I slotted the roof light in the hole it did not sit flat with the van.
This was simply resolved by putting some spaces in the gaps. I cut some spaces off plastic I had sitting around in the garage and glued them to the van around the edge.
Now on the inside of the van I just need to insert the inside part in the roof light and screw together tight.
Before I could insert the this part I needed to finish cladding the ceiling around the roof light so when I screw it together everything will be sandwiched together.
Lastly just need to seal it. Got back on the roof and used waterproof silicone sealant around the edge of the roof light. Put it on all the way round and smoothed using my finger.
The benefits of having this skylight is that more light is entered inside the van and its also good for ventilation, especially when cooking.
I hope this post has been very useful. Any more advice then please don’t hesitate to ask.
