I’ve purchased a 11kg refillable bottle made by GAS IT. This will fit inside the kitchen cupboard underneath the gas hob, it will supply gas to my Propex heater, 2 ring gas hob and instant hot water tank.
Why purchase a refillable bottle?
By purchasing a refillable bottle it enables me to refill it myself at fuel stations without the need of removing the bottle from its cupboard. Normal gas bottles require you to hand in your original empty bottle and then swap it for another full bottle. As I will be traveling around Europe not all shops will have the same type of gas bottle such as calor or Flo gas like we do in Britain. So by having a refillable gas bottle it will make life more easier on the road and without any fuss of refilling it.
The gas bottle will be stored inside a kitchen cupboard underneath the gas hob. It’s a tight fit as I needed to save room when building the kitchen unit so there’s enough room walking in and out of the van.
When building the kitchen unit I made sure the cupboard size was perfect for the bottle.
A drop vent had to be installed in the floor. If there was ever a gas leak the gas would simply drop though the floor to the outside because gas it heavier than air.
All gas bottles are required to have a regulator because pressures in propane tanks can fluctuate significantly. The regulator will keep a steady flow of gas coming out and also allows me to increase and decrease its pressure.
Gas It bottles require a UK POL adaptor so a regulator can be connected. the adaptors are purchased off there website.
The gas manifold is used to switch on/off separate gas appliances. I attached a short length of 8mm copper pipe to each part of the manifold, this was so the flexible gas pipe could connect to it and just tightened with jubilee clips.
To refill the bottle at fuel stations I have a fill point on the back of the kitchen unit that is connected to the gas bottle via a gas hose pipe. This is easily accessible when open sliding side door.
Filling up the gas for the first time was scary as I had never done it before, but there is nothing to be scared about as it’s actually very simple. Just like filling up for fuel.
I had to purchase these adaptors off GAS IT website to enable me to refill my gas bottle.
The bottle is secured by a ratchet strap so it cannot move around while driving.
