Fixing Dents And Rust

By on 6th January 2017

As my van is over 10 years old and been mainly used as a works van, it has gained its fair share of dents, scratches and rust over the years. If left untreated the rust will get worse in the future.

The van is going to get a full respray soon by a friend and I need to fix these issues before it goes in to get painted.

I have never done any body works repair on a vehicle so this has been a big learning stage for me.

Repair list

  • Sliding door sill
  • Surface rust
  • Rear door dents

Stage 1: Sliding door sill

At some point the original sliding door sill had been cut off due to rust or a dent I assume and then a horrible piece of metal was welded on. I purchased a new sill off eBay and got it welded on by a professional.

All finished and painted

Stage 2: surface rust

The van had spots of surface rust on the side, sills and wheel arches. As it is just surface rust I just needed to sand it down to bare metal and treat with rust killer. If needed be I would then use body filler and sand to a smooth finish.

The wheel arch had a big dent in it and over time gained a lot of surface rust. I First sanded it down to metal and then grinder the surface lightly to remove all the rust.

I then covered it in body filler and tried to recreate the wheel arch shape. This was very time-consuming. It took a lot of patience. After sanding I would then fill and sand again and again until the shape was the best I could get it to be.

Spraying primer on helps see imperfections much clearer. The wheel arch looks better than it did but still needs a bit more work.

The wheel arch looks a whole lot better than it did. its not perfect but Im happy with the results and best of all NO MORE RUST.

Stage 3: Rear door dent

The rear door also has a big dent at the bottom. I used the same process as I did on the wheel arch, fill, sand and repeat until perfect.

As I said above I’ve never done body work before and I really don’t want to ever do it again. Overall I don’t think I’ve done a bad job at repairing the dents and rust for a newbie.

The van will be getting a full respray by a friend. Not sure what colour I will have it yet. Ive grown to love the red so might just have it red again. Only time will tell.
